1070 - “Saint Francis in Meditation”, After Francisco de Zurbarán, Spanish School, 19th Century

“Saint Francis in Meditation”, After Francisco de Zurbarán, Spanish School, 19th Century Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 102 x 82 cm. The painting depicts a Franciscan friar in contemplation, dressed in a woolen habit and holding a skull, a symbol of vanitas. The lateral light source falls on the saint's face and hands, in a masterful chiaroscuro reminiscent of Zurbarán's tenebrist technique. The artist achieves a powerful effect of introspection and contemplation, conveying serenity and spirituality through the contrast between the shadows of the background and the clarity of the habit. The dense brushwork and tonal harmony accentuate the formal austerity characteristic of 17th-century Spain, where realism is at the service of devotion. A representative work of mystical Baroque, a direct heir to the monastic tradition and Counter-Reformation iconography.
