Apostle, Matthias Stomer (h. 1600-h. 1650), Italian school, 17th century Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 64 x 49 cm (85 x 70 cm with frame). We thank Doctor Nicola Spinosa's help in the identification of the present artwork. Ex-european private collection. Bust portrait of an elderly man with a white beard and an introspective gaze, modeled using strong chiaroscuro against a dark background. The directed lighting and anatomical realism denote the characteristic tenebrist influence. The impasto brushstrokes and chromatic density lend psychological intensity to the figure, typical of the 17th-century Hispano-Neapolitan naturalist tradition. The work is in good condition and is housed in a period gilt frame.
