965 - 18th Century New Spanish School - Virgin and Child

18th Century New Spanish School - Virgin and Child Oil on canvas. This piece, attributed to the Hispano-American Colonial School of the 18th Century, portrays a delicate representation of the Virgin and Child. The Virgin Mary, with a serene expression of tenderness, holds the Christ Child wrapped in a white cloth, while He grasps a fruit, symbolizing redemption. The composition, intimate and devotional in nature, stands out for its simplicity and profound spirituality. The contrast between the dark background and the illuminated figures draws attention to the protagonists, creating an atmosphere of solemnity and contemplation. The warm, earthy color palette harmoniously combines the Virgin’s dark mantle with the soft pink and golden hues of her garments. The Christ Child, with a gaze that seems to transcend the earthly realm, adds dynamism to the work, reflecting the duality of His human and divine nature. The delicate brushwork and the treatment of the folds in the drapery reveal the influence of European models imported to the colonies, adapted with a local style that emphasizes sweetness and closeness in religious themes. Likely intended for a private space or a small chapel, this piece reflects the deep religious devotion and the significance of sacred art in the colonial context. It is a work that blends European tradition with the artistic sensibility of the New World. Measurements: 80x60 cm without frame 90x70 cm with frame. Located in international warehouse.
