Pair of decorative plaques with allegorical female figures – French School – late 19th century A pair of patinated bronze decorative plaques, exemplifying the French ornamental taste of the late 19th century, a time when applied sculpture and the decorative arts reached extraordinary formal richness. Conceived as a set, both compositions depict allegorical female figures surrounded by exuberant vegetal decoration and numerous symbolic elements that transform each plaque into a small sculptural scene. The relief work is notable for its extraordinary profusion of detail. The figures are elegantly dressed in historically inspired garments, accompanied by fans, flowers, fruit, and bucolic elements. The treatment of the fabrics, the folds of the garments, and the hair contrasts with the rougher surfaces of the background, creating different levels of depth and an interesting interplay of light and shadow on the bronze. During the last decades of the 19th century, France experienced a genuine fascination with historical ornamentation, decorative sculpture, and the reinterpretation of past styles. The taste for allegorical scenes, idealized figures, and ornamental exuberance found a privileged place in both architecture and bourgeois and aristocratic interiors. Bronze plaques like these could function as independent elements of wall decoration or be integrated into furniture, doors, architectural panels, and larger decorative ensembles. Dimensions: 69 × 36 × 7 cm each.
