Museum Travel Cabinet Spain, c. 1500 Walnut Architecturally structured interior with 19 drawers Original iron fittings and lock with traces of gilding Shell-shaped handles and appliqués On an original, architecturally structured walnut base Extendable support rails for the writing flap Cabinet: Height 56 cm, Width 104 cm, Depth 40 cm Total height 136 cm Restored, parts replaced; in good condition for its age The travel cabinet belongs to the tradition of Spanish writing and storage furniture, which was known as an “escritorio” and later as a “bargueño” or “vargueño.” These pieces combined the secure storage of documents and valuable objects with a portable writing surface. Side carrying handles allowed the cabinet to be moved, while the fold-down front served as a writing surface. When placed on a base, the portable cabinet became a piece of representative furniture. In this particular example, behind the writing flap lies an architecturally structured interior with 19 drawers. The orderly design is reminiscent of a small architectural facade and combines practical storage space with an impressive structure. The original base unit echoes this structure. Extendable support rails hold the open flap in place; iron hinges, side handles, and the lock complete the construction. The shell-shaped handles and appliqués add distinctive accents, including the handles on the support rails, which still bear traces of gilding. The shell, as a symbol of St. James, is closely associated with the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Such a connection is conceivable here, although shell motifs are generally part of the widespread ornamental repertoire of Spanish cabinet furniture. The curved, ornately intertwined metal appliqués enrich the clean lines of the walnut body. They combine the stabilizing function of the hardware with a decorative effect. The preserved traces of gilding reveal the originally striking contrast between wood and metal and underscore the piece’s status as a prestigious item.
