Francesco Lorenzi 1723-1787, attributed The Mercy of Scipio Oil on canvas, relined 122.2 x 147.4 cm, with frame 142 x 169 cm Provenance: Laudon Palace, Vienna Francesco Lorenzi is considered one of the leading figures of 18th-century Venetian-influenced painting. After his initial training in Verona, he worked in the studio of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo in Venice, whose visual language had a lasting influence on his work. As a painter of religious and secular subjects, as well as a fresco artist, he translated his teacher’s dynamic compositions and luminous color palette into his own distinctive and visually striking style. The painting attributed to Lorenzi depicts a famous episode from the life of the Roman general Publius Cornelius Scipio, later known as Scipio Africanus. After the conquest of New Carthage—present-day Cartagena—in 209 B.C., a young captive was brought before him. When he learned that she was betrothed to the Celtiberian nobleman Allucius, he returned her to him unharmed. He gave the ransom offered by her relatives to the couple as a wedding gift. Known as “Scipio’s Magnanimity” or “Scipio’s Abstinence,” this story became a symbol of self-control and the responsible exercise of power. Arranged in a pyramidal formation, the group of figures gathers around the general, who sits slightly elevated on a pedestal. His ornate helmet with a plume is pulled low over his forehead; the red robe and the folding chair emphasize his status. To the right stands the young woman, whose cloak is held by a servant. Her right hand rests in the left hand of her fiancé, who stands beside her; he extends his right hand toward the general and has clasped the general’s hand. These clasped hands make the union of the couple the focal point of the scene. Behind Scipio appears an older man in a bright ochre and blue robe with a turban-like headdress. Other figures wearing Ottoman-style turbans and military attire complete the group. On the left, a servant carries a small chest, which, in the context of the narrative, can be interpreted as a reference to the ransom offered. A bow and arrow, carafes, plates, and vases at the left edge of the painting also evoke the spoils of the victorious army. In the background, mounted soldiers with feather-adorned helmets and standards bearing blue and white cloths are depicted; to the right, the view opens onto a city. The vibrant shades of ochre, blue, and red create striking accents within the scene teeming with figures. Antique-style armor and imaginatively designed robes combine to form a theatrical historical tableau, much as was prized in 18th-century Venetian painting. The subject matter offered both an opportunity to depict precious fabrics and military splendor and to convey a moral ideal. Scipio’s magnanimity was particularly well-suited for decorating stately rooms as an example of a victor whose true greatness is evident in his self-control and generosity.
