Utagawa Kunisada II (1823–1880) Courtesan This elegant composition depicts an oiran, a high-ranking courtesan from the pleasure quarters of the Edo period, recognizable by her sumptuous hairstyle adorned with numerous kanzashi and the exceptional richness of her kimonos. She is depicted on a terrace overlooking a mountainous landscape beneath a cherry tree in bloom, in an atmosphere of refinement. Woodblock print Signed “Kunisada ga” in a red Toshidama cartouche on the right side of the print Publisher: Seal of Tsutaya Kichizo (Koeido) Period: Censor’s seal “Horse 11,” corresponding to the 11th month of 1858 Format: Oban tate-e Colors well preserved. Scattered signs of wear and soiling, missing sections, small tears, and a few wormholes. Provenance: Vally Manor, Guingamp.
