LONGUS and AMYOT, Jacques. *The Pastoral Loves of Daphnis and Chloe*. A rare edition printed on fine laid paper at the expense of the Count of Artois, in a lovely full morocco binding of the period. Paris, Didot l'Aîné, 1780. In-18, full green morocco, smooth spine decorated with gilt fleurons and the title in gilt, gilt fillet framing the covers, interior frieze, marbled paper endpapers and linings, all edges gilt (contemporary binding). 200 pages, title vignette featuring the coat of arms of the Count of Artois, 2 headbands, and a footer. Binding slightly rubbed, light brown marks on the covers, slight yellowing, and a few foxing spots in the margins. A charming edition printed in very limited numbers on fine laid paper, part of the prestigious collection of works printed by order of His Excellency the Count of Artois (the future Charles X), whose coat of arms is printed on the title page. Speaking of the Count’s collection, Brunet noted that “it would be difficult for typography to produce anything more beautiful than these… small volumes, which will always be counted among Didot’s masterpieces.” A renowned masterpiece of Greek literature attributed to Longus (2nd–3rd century), recounting the budding love between two young shepherds on the island of Lesbos, in the classic translation by Jacques Amyot (1513–1593). A superb copy in full period morocco leather.
