Large square 8vo, red half-maroquin with corners edged in a gold fillet, spine with 4 raised bands highlighted by a gold dotted line, floral decoration in gold and mosaic morocco in black, tan, and red, author’s name in gold lettering, date at the foot, gilt head, illustrated covers and spine preserved, edged slipcase (binding signed Michon) 284 pages, 63 color illustrations by George Barbier, including one as a frontispiece. Binding slightly rubbed, slight wear to the slipcase. A charming illustrated edition of this novel by Henri de Régner, set in the era of Mandrin (the famous 18th-century smuggler), whose main hero shares his fascination with adventure and smuggling. The illustrations include 63 original compositions by George Barbier, colored using the stencil technique; this marks one of his last major illustration projects before his untimely death in 1932. Limited edition of 1,075 copies; this is one of 877 numbered copies on Rives paper (no. 882). A beautiful copy in a mosaic-bound edition.
