One of the most prominent art casters in Paris in the mid-19th century, Charles Matifat (c. 1820–after 1875) was a student of the goldsmith Antoine Vechte. Around 1840, he succeeded his father as head of the family business, founded in 1820 on Rue de la Perle in Paris. As an exhibitor at the 1849 National Industrial Exhibition, he was awarded a silver medal. In 1851, at the Great Exhibition in London, he exhibited (No. 923 in the French section) “Clocks, chandeliers, and various bronze items,” to quote the official catalog.
