Jean-François MILLET (Gruchy 1814 – Barbizon 1875) Preliminary studies for *The Reaper*, double-sided Black pencil Monogram stamp on the front in the center and on the back in the lower left corner (L.1460) 29.5 x 47.4 cm With frame: 55 x 72 cm (Small spots, slight creases, irregular edges of the sheet) This sheet is a preparatory study for one of the seated reapers in the center of Jean François Millet’s painting “Reapers at Rest (Ruth and Boaz),” held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Presented at the 1853 Salon, this painting, which illustrates the biblical story of Ruth and Boaz, was renamed to emphasize the contemporary nature of the composition. Millet produced numerous preparatory studies for “The Reapers,” including the drawing “The Reapers at Rest,” held at the Musée d’Orsay (see inventory number RF 4182). This drawing is a preparatory study for the kneeling reaper in the center of the Boston painting, who is holding a jug and turning toward the left. Provenance: Monogram stamp on the front at the center and on the back in the lower left, affixed by his widow to the drawings sold at the studio auction (L.1460).
