Mumuyé figure, Nigeria, wood, H. 77 cm x W. 19 cm (on a base). In the late 1960s, the anarchy caused by the Ibo Civil War in southern Nigeria, coupled with the abandonment of religious practices, led to a large number of Mumuyé statues—discovered by Philippe Guimiot—finding their way to Europe. Although the first publication devoted to them dates from 1970 (Fry, 1970, vol. x, fasc. 1), their function remains much less well known than that of masks. According to Strybol (in RMN, 1997: 239), although it is not possible to associate a specific form or style with a defined use, these statues may, depending on the context, serve a divinatory or therapeutic function, or contribute to enhancing the prestige of their owner.
