JAVIER MARISCAL (Almazora, Castellón, 1950) “The Garris Fishing with Fredoman and Piker,” 1995. Color silkscreen on paper. Edition 58/100. It has numerous brown spots along the margins and yellowing of the paper. Stamped on the reverse by Javier Cebrián’s screen-printing studio in Altea. Signed and dated in pencil at the bottom. Measurements: 68.5 x 53 cm (framed). In *Los Garriris Fishing*, Javier Mariscal unfolds his characteristic graphic universe in a sequential composition of five panels that combines storytelling, humor, and chromatic expressiveness. The black outlines, spontaneous drawing, and fields of flat color come together to create a scene with a Mediterranean atmosphere in which the freshness of the illustration coexists with the dynamism inherent in the language of comics. The illustration belongs to the world of Los Garriris, the characters created by Mariscal in 1974 and present since his earliest works linked to the Spanish underground comics scene. With their carefree appearance and nonconformist spirit, these characters represent one of the most personal aspects of his body of work, where popular culture, illustration, and a unique interpretation of everyday Mediterranean life converge. A leading figure in contemporary Spanish design, Mariscal has developed a multidisciplinary career spanning drawing, comics, illustration, graphic design, furniture design, and character creation. His visual language—recognizable by the freedom of his lines, his expressive use of color, and a constant penchant for humor—gained particularly notable international recognition with the creation of Cobi, the mascot of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. It has numerous brown spots along the margins and yellowish discoloration on the paper. It bears a stamp on the back from Javier Cebrián’s screen-printing studio in Altea.
