CHARLES FRÉGER (Bourges, France, 1975) Portfolio “Maul. Photographic Portraits and Uniforms,” 2005. Set of 9 color photographs. Prints made in 2006. Portfolio numbered 4/10 and signed. Measurements: 30.5 x 24 cm per sheet; 20 x 26 cm per image; 39 x 30 cm with mat. The “Maul” portfolio brings together nine color photographic portraits centered on the world of athletic uniforms. True to one of the essential themes of his work, Fréger observes individuals not through the intimate psychology of the traditional portrait, but through the visual codes that define a sense of belonging: clothing, posture, discipline, and group. The images depict young people portrayed head-on, with an almost typological simplicity. The neutrality of the background and the precision of the framing allow the uniform to take center stage as a sign of collective identity. However, beneath this objective appearance, each figure retains a unique presence: a gaze, a physical tension, a way of occupying space. The series reflects Fréger’s interest in communities structured by rules, rituals, and attire: athletes, military personnel, students, ceremonial groups, or traditional collectives. In “Maul,” rugby—suggested by the title itself and the protective gear—appears not as a competitive spectacle, but as a social language: a system of bodies in formation, hierarchy, resilience, and belonging. Charles Fréger is a French photographer born in Bourges in 1975. His work focuses on serial portraits of communities around the world, examining uniforms, ceremonial attire, and codes of belonging. Among his best-known series are “Rikishi,” “Maul,” “Wilder Mann,” “Yokainoshima,” and “Bretonnes.” His work lies at the intersection of documentary photography, anthropological study, and the formal construction of the contemporary portrait.
