ALBERTO SÁNCHEZ PÉREZ (Toledo, 1895 – Moscow, 1962). “Bird Drinking Water,” 1956–1958. Bronze sculpture on a wooden base. Number 448/1600. Work published by Mr. Jorge L. Lacasa Sancha. Signed and numbered. Measurements: 27 x 7 x 11.5 cm. A sculpture in the round conceived from an avant-garde aesthetic, as it features an abstract form. Here, the sculptor plays with the interplay between matter and void, or space. He thus creates an opening in the center of the piece that establishes a shared language between the sculpture and its surroundings. The painter and sculptor Alberto Sánchez was a driving force behind the Vallecas School, and in 1937 he exhibited a large sculpture at the Spanish Republic Pavilion at the International Exhibition in Paris. In 1938, the Republican government sent him to Moscow to teach drawing to exiled Spanish children, and he would never return. In 2002, a tribute was held in his honor at the Santa Cruz Museum in his hometown. His work is currently represented at the Reina Sofía National Museum of Contemporary Art (MNCA), the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, the Open-Air Sculpture Museum on Madrid’s Paseo de la Castellana, the ICO Collections, the Toledo Museum of Contemporary Art, the National Library, the Santander Central Hispano collection, and in various private collections, including that of Ambassador Ernesto Madero in Mexico.
