MANUEL OLARTE (Málaga, 1960–2012). Untitled, 1992. Wood and iron. Signed and dated. Measurements: 156 x 54 x 36 cm. An organic and constructive sculpture by Manuel Olarte, whose practice was distinguished by his constant exploration of the expressive possibilities of materials. The work features a vertical structure in which the solidity of the wood creates a counterpoint to the presence of iron, generating a dialogue between weight and lightness, stability and tension. The composition is developed through curved metal elements arranged at the top, whose contrasting forms suggest a restrained movement, verging on unstable equilibrium. In contrast to the solidity of the base, the ascending structure takes on a dynamic and almost organic dimension, transforming the combination of industrial and natural materials into a work of remarkable sculptural power.Dated 1992, the piece belongs to a period of experimentation in which Olarte explored the possibilities of metalwork, textures, and oxidation processes, investigating the transformations that matter undergoes through artistic intervention. His artistic language, situated between abstraction and the evocation of natural forms, reveals an interest in balance, rhythm, and the intrinsic expressiveness of materials. Manuel Olarte (1960–2012) was a multidisciplinary artist associated with the Málaga art scene. Throughout his career, he also participated in set design projects and multimedia initiatives. Beginning in 2000, he expanded his practice to include the construction of musical instruments from recycled materials, collaborating with the La Contenta Orchestra. His sculptural work is found in various private European collections and bears witness to a personal practice, free from conventions and deeply committed to the expressive possibilities of the material.
