ROBERTO BURLE MARX (São Paulo, Brazil, 1909 – Rio de Janeiro, 1994). Untitled. Acrylic on paper. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 20 x 28.5 cm; 24 x 32.5 cm (frame). Biomorphic abstraction is one of the most characteristic aspects of Roberto Burle Marx’s painterly output, closely linked to his innovative conception of landscape. In this composition, organic forms in blue, yellow, and green are articulated by a sinuous black outline, creating a dynamic interplay of overlaps and chromatic hallmarks. The flat surfaces and undulating contours evoke the language of his celebrated landscape projects, where vegetation is organized into large masses of color and texture. The formal synthesis and the balance between spontaneity and geometric structure reveal the influence of the abstract avant-garde movements on his artistic language. Roberto Burle Marx was a prominent Brazilian painter, designer, and landscape architect, considered one of the key innovators of 20th-century landscape architecture. Trained at the National School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro, he developed a revolutionary conception of the garden, incorporating native species and principles of modern art. Among his most renowned projects are the gardens of the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro and Flamengo Park. His work is represented in institutions such as MoMA in New York and MASP in São Paulo. In 1991, MoMA dedicated the exhibition *Roberto Burle Marx: The Unnatural Art of the Garden* to him.
