DONALD SULTAN (Asheville, North Carolina, 1951). “Three Black Eggs, June 20, 1988.” Charcoal on paper. Titled, dated, and signed with initials in the upper margin. Measurements: 122 x 153 cm; 128.5 x 159 cm (frame). This 1988 work belongs to one of the most recognizable strands of Donald Sultan’s oeuvre, centered on the transformation of everyday motifs into compositions of great monumentality and visual impact. Three ovoid shapes in intense black dominate the surface of the paper, creating a powerful contrast with the white background. The apparent simplicity of the composition conceals an elaborate interplay of tonal gradations and textures, achieved through the layering and blending of charcoal. The blurred contours and asymmetrical arrangement of the forms create a subtle spatial tension, bringing the representation closer to minimalist approaches without losing its figurative reference. The composition is part of the explorations Sultan undertook during the 1980s, when he transformed elements such as lemons, eggs, and flowers into images of extraordinary visual power. His treatment of black—which acquires remarkable density through the contrast between compact surfaces and diffuse edges—constitutes one of the most personal aspects of his artistic language, in which formal economy coexists with an intense material sensuality. Donald Sultan is a leading figure in contemporary American art. Trained at the University of North Carolina and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he achieved international recognition in the 1980s thanks to his explorations of materiality and his reinterpretation of traditional genres. In 1988, the Museum of Modern Art in New York dedicated the exhibition “Donald Sultan’s Black Lemons” to him, while the Brooklyn Museum presented a broad selection of his paintings and drawings. His work is included in the collections of MoMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.
