Émile Bernard (1868–1941) and Henri Guérard (1846–1897) La Plume. No. 106, Vol. 5, September 15, 1893. One volume, small quarto [170 x 260 mm]; this issue features an article by Francis Jourdain on the Salon de La Plume and Émile Bernard, pp. 390–397. An exceptional bound copy, formerly owned by Francis Jourdain, enriched with several works and documents: - Bound at the top is a letter from Léon Deschamps, editor of the journal, on La Plume letterhead, dated July 20, 1893, addressed (according to a handwritten note in pencil at the top) to Francis Jourdain regarding Émile Bernard: "My dear Colleague, / Everything you propose is accepted. / However, this is not to fill a gap—there / is never one here—but rather to have the opportunity / to discuss an artist I admire and to provide our / subscribers—for there are many of them!—with a good page / of criticism. / Warm regards, / Léon Deschamps.” - Bound opposite page 393, where it is reproduced, is a lottery ticket engraved by Émile Bernard: Virgin and Child. 1891. Wood engraving. [135 x 216 mm]. Morane 25. A very fine print on thin ivory laid paper, colored in pale gray watercolor and marked with the number 57 in lavender-blue ink applied with a brush in the lower right corner, mounted on a vertical tab. This print bears the inscription engraved in reverse: “Lottery for a poor man.” At the top, one can make out “Miserere Nobis.” “This time, the aim was to help a poor man from Saint-Briac, Jean Challoux, in whose plight his sister Madeleine had apparently taken a particular interest during the summer of 1891.” " (D. Morane, Émile Bernard, Catalogue Raisonné of Engraved Works, Musée de Pont-Aven, Jacques Doucet Library of Art and Archaeology, Paris, 2000, p. 40). "The print run for this lottery ticket appears to have been smaller than that of the previous two. Bernard tried to sell some to Schuffenecker, but it seems that Madeleine handled the bulk of the sales. " (D. Morane, op. cit., p. 43). - Mounted on the inside front cover is an original drawing by Henri Guérard, *Portrait of Émile Bernard*, pen and India ink on Rhodoid. [62 x 101 mm] (drawing reproduced on p. 390). - Bound to the reverse of this drawing is a drawing by Émile Bernard, *Head of a Breton Woman*, brush and India ink on thin white vellum. [105 x 179 mm]. Signed and dated “1888” in black chalk at the bottom left, glued at the corners. Small tear in the upper left corner. Bound successively thereafter: - A drawing by Émile Bernard, *Breton Women in the Orchard with Geese*, pen and India ink on thin white vellum. [198 x 150 mm]. Signed with initials and dated “1888” at the bottom left, mounted by the corners. Small losses with pen repairs in three corners and minor damage to the edges. The subject is reminiscent of both the 1889 woodcut, *La Lessive* (Morane 8), and the zincograph *La Cueillette des pommes*, from the same year (Morane 17). - A drawing by Émile Bernard, *Saint Veronica and the Holy Face*, pen and India ink on thin white vellum. [155 x 198 mm]. Mounted at the corners. Minor damage to the left edge. This drawing is related to the lithograph *Saint Veronica and the Instruments of the Passion, the Holy Face* (Morane 47), circa 1895. - A lottery ticket engraved by Émile Bernard, *The Woman with the Geese*. 1891. Woodcut. [155 x 120 mm]. Morane 23. A very fine print on thin ivory laid paper, colored in pink and yellow watercolor, signed and numbered “19” in blue ink with a brush in the center, mounted on a vertical tab. - A lottery ticket engraved by Émile Bernard, *In a Garden*. 1890. Wood engraving. [125 x 165 mm]. Morane 24. A very fine proof on thin vellum, from the first state before field coloring and bearing the inscription “lottery for a painting by,” heavily retouched in graphite and colored with yellow gouache, mounted on a vertical tab. A small graphite sketch of a head on the reverse. This lottery ticket is reproduced as a supplement to *La Plume*, opposite page 390. The edges of the magazine’s pages are very fragile and brittle. AABM stamp (Lugt 3075). [...]
