INOUE KUNITAKA: A CHOSHU SCHOOL IRON ‘HUNTER AND RABBITS’ TSUBA By Inoue Kunitaka, signed Choshu Kunitaka saku Japan, mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Of nadekakugata form, with one kozuka and one kogai hitsu ana, carved in takabori, katakiribori, and kebori, as well as inlaid in gold and silver takazogan, featuring a hunter holding a tanegashima teppo rifle and chasing rabbits under the crescent moon. Signed CHOSHU KUNITAKA saku [Made by Kunitaka of Choshu]. HEIGHT 8 cm, WIDTH 7.5 cm HEIGHT 3 cm (nakago-ana) THICKNESS 0.4 cm (seppa-dai) WEIGHT 147.6 g Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear. Inoue Kunitaka (active c. 1850s) is listed in Robert E. Haynes, The Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists, p. 755 (H 03666.0). Museum comparison: Compare a related shibuichi tsuba depicting a hunter blowing a deer-call, with a stag and doe to the reverse, signed Kanzui, dated to the first half of the 19th century, measuring 7.5 cm in height, in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, accession no. EAX.10982.
