168 - A FINE AND LARGE GOLD-LACQUER 'FIVE-CLAWED IMPERIAL DRAGON' KOGO (INCENSE BOX)

A FINE AND LARGE GOLD-LACQUER 'FIVE-CLAWED IMPERIAL DRAGON' KOGO (INCENSE BOX) Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Of circular form, bearing a lustrous fundame ground finely decorated in gold and red takamaki-e and hiramaki-e. The inrobuta (flush-fitting) cover boldly depicting a magnificent five-clawed dragon writhing amid dense scrolling clouds, its fierce horned head rendered frontally with bulging eyes, open jaws, and long, flowing whiskers. Its sinuous body, finely articulated scales, and powerful outstretched claws are rendered in relief, further embellished with brilliant iridescent aogai (mother-of-pearl) inlays along its undulating back. The imposing composition closely recalls the five-clawed imperial dragons of Qing China, particularly those adorning the magnificent robes of the Qianlong Emperor (1736-1795). The sides are further decorated in low relief with clouds and waves centered by a tall waterfall. The interior of rich e-nashiji with fundame rims. DIAMETER 12.3 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor expected wear and light rubbing to edges. The underside with a restoration to the edge. Presenting beautifully.
