† SHOSAI: A FINE AND AUSPICIOUS BRONZE OKIMONO OF EIGHT RATS By Shosai, signed Shosai chu Japan, late 19th to early 20th century, Meiji period (1868-1912) Naturalistically cast as an adult rat gripping a large split pomegranate, accompanied by seven young, several playfully clambering over its back and sides, two tumbling over each other, and others gathered around a persimmon. The lively composition is finely detailed with realistically modeled fur, delicate paws, and long, curling tails, the eyes inlaid in silver. Signed to the underside SHOSAI chu [cast by Shosai] within a rectangular reserve. LENGTH 21 cm WEIGHT 4.4 kg Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, mostly to the underside from contact with the surface. The rat (nezumi) is an auspicious animal in Japanese tradition, associated with Daikokuten, the God of Wealth and Prosperity, and symbolizing fertility, abundance, and numerous descendants. The depiction of eight rats is particularly auspicious, as the number eight (hachi) is associated in Japan with suehirogari, or ever-expanding prosperity, while the seed-filled pomegranate further reinforces the symbolism of fertility and abundance. Auction comparison: Compare a closely related bronze okimono of rats, signed Dai Nihon Marunobu sei, dated late 19 th century, 17 cm wide, at Christie’s, Japanese Art & Design, 11 May 2011, London, lot 378 (sold for GBP 8,125 or approx. EUR 15,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). 13% VAT will be added to the hammer price additional to the buyer's premium - only for buyers within the EU.
