Spanish School, second half of the 17th century. “Saint Jerome.” Oil on canvas. Relined. Measurements: 98.5 x 79 cm; 109 x 92 cm (frame). The figure of Saint Jerome, one of the four great Fathers of the Latin Church, is one of the most evocative subjects in Baroque religious painting. In this composition, the saint is depicted as an elderly hermit, half-naked and partially covered by a wide cloak of intense reddish color. His physique, marked by the passage of time, takes center stage through directed lighting that emerges from the surrounding darkness. The body thus becomes a vehicle for spiritual expression: physical frailty and the renunciation of earthly pleasures are hallmarks of the inner strength of one who has devoted his life to the faith. The iconography brings together some of the saint’s traditional attributes. The open book, an allusion to his intellectual work and his famous translation of the Bible into Latin—known as the Vulgate—refers to his status as a theologian and scholar. The crucifix and the skull evoke meditation on the Passion of Christ and the transience of life, while the stone he holds in his hand alludes to his acts of mortification. At his feet, the lion recalls the legendary episode linking the saint to this animal, which has become one of his most recognizable attributes. From a stylistic perspective, the painting belongs to the naturalist tradition of the 17th-century Spanish school, which emerged from the Tenebrist revolution that had transformed religious painting since the beginning of the century. The marked contrast between light and shadow, the figure’s physicality, and the restrained color palette contribute to creating an atmosphere of contemplation and emotional intensity. The light, concentrated mainly on the saint’s face, torso, and limbs, directs the viewer’s gaze toward his inner experience, while the dark, rocky background accentuates the sense of isolation characteristic of the hermit’s life.
