Italian school; 18th century. “The Martyrdom of Saint Barbara.” Oil on canvas. The frame is damaged. There is an inscription on the back. Measurements: 106 x 85 cm; 117 x 96 cm (frame). The composition depicts the dramatic episode of the martyrdom of Saint Barbara, whose narrative intensity is conveyed through the dynamic arrangement of the figures and the striking chromatic contrast. The range of earthy and ochre tones, nuanced by areas of greater luminosity, helps accentuate the drama of the scene. An executioner violently grabs the saint by the hair as he raises his sword, ready to behead her. In the face of her assailant’s violence, Barbara maintains an attitude of serene fortitude: kneeling, with her hands open in a gesture of supplication, she raises her gaze upward, looking toward the divine realm. In the background of the composition stands the tower with its three windows, an iconographic attribute alluding to the Holy Trinity and recalling the episode of her conversion. Above the saint, a halo of glory heralds the appearance of an angel descending to place the crown of martyrdom upon her head, thus foreshadowing her spiritual triumph in the face of the violence of her execution. The story of Saint Barbara, widely disseminated in the West through the Golden Legend by James of the Whirlpool, recounts the martyrdom of a young woman of noble birth who secretly embraced Christianity in the face of opposition from her father, Dioscorus. According to tradition, she was locked in a tower to shield her from Christian influence. There, she ordered a third window to be opened—a symbol of the Holy Trinity—thus revealing her conversion. After refusing to renounce her faith, she was subjected to cruel torture by order of the authorities and, ultimately, sentenced to death by beheading. Tradition holds that it was her own father who carried out the sentence and that, immediately afterward, he was struck dead by lightning as divine punishment. The frame is damaged.
