SIRATÓ (Charles). Dimensionist Manifesto. Paris: Librairie José Corti, 1936. — Full-sheet, 478 x 326, printed on both sides. A very rare first edition of the Dimensionist Manifesto, theorized by the Hungarian poet Charles Sirató (1905–1980) and signed by numerous French and foreign writers and artists, among the most important of the era: Alexander Calder, Vicente Huidobro, Joan Miró, Hans Arp, Pierre Albert-Birot, Marcel Duchamp, Wassily Kandinsky, Francis Picabia, Sonia Delaunay, etc. The manifesto appears on the front: “Dimensionism is a general movement in the arts, unconsciously initiated by Cubism and Futurism—and continuously elaborated and developed ever since by all peoples of Western civilization. […] At the origin of Dimensionism lie also the new ideas of space-time in the European mind (spread in particular by Einstein’s theories)—as well as the recent technical advancements of our era. […] This new ideology has caused a veritable seismic shock and subsequently a landslide within the conventional system of the arts. We refer to the totality of these phenomena by the term: “DIMENSIONISM.” / Trend or Principle of Dimensionism. Formula: “N+1.” (A formula discovered in the theory of Planism and subsequently generalized, reducing even the most seemingly chaotic and inexplicable manifestations of our artistic era to a common law.) […] Thus, the Dimensionist trend has compelled: I… Literature to step outside the line and enter the plane. II… Painting to leave the plane and occupy space. III… Sculpture to abandon closed, immobile, and dead space—that is, Euclid’s three-dimensional space—in order to subjugate Minkowski’s four-dimensional space to artistic expression.” On the reverse side are the movement’s calendar and news—the “Mosaic” section, announcements of publications, and the journal “N+1 ”—along with, in the lower right corner, an announcement for the First International Exhibition of Dimensionism, scheduled to take place in Paris in the fall of 1936 but which never occurred. A copy folded in four, in very good condition.
