136 - Marka (Maraka) Mask from Ntomo, Mali.

Marka (Maraka) Mask from Ntomo, Mali. A remarkable anthropomorphic mask carved from dense wood, with a narrow, elongated face, topped by five tall vertical spikes. The face is entirely covered with thin sheets of yellow metal, probably brass, richly decorated with geometric motifs created by punching and repoussé techniques. The almond-shaped eyes, long straight nose, and small protruding mouth lend the mask great sculptural elegance. It has a beautiful, antique-looking metallic patina, showing signs of oxidation, wear, and slight distortions in the metal leaf, which is held in place by numerous fastening nails. Height: 43 cm
