Kifwebe Mask, Songye ethnic group. DR Congo. Carved wood, pigments. This elongated mask features a domed forehead accented by a dark central band, an angular nose, and a strongly protruding quadrangular mouth. A fine network of striations follows the contours of the face and converges in a herringbone pattern beneath the mouth. The absence of a high crest suggests this is a female-type mask. Nuanced brown patina, remnants of light and reddish-brown pigments; wear, small chips, and cracks. Peripheral holes for mounting. First half of the 20th century. Provenance: private collection, Liège Height: 41.5 cm
