A tall crown extends from the elongated face, whose hair is parted into two soft bands across the forehead. The almond-shaped eyes, slender nose, and slightly smiling lips create a gentle and attentive expression. The simplicity of the ornamentation highlights the balance of the sculpted form. This mask, likely depicting Lhamu, was worn during performances of the Aji Lhamu, a dance-theater tradition practiced by the Monpa and Sherdukpen peoples. A celestial being who descended to earth, Lhamu becomes the wife of King Gyeli, who is associated with Prince Norzang. Presented notably during Losar, the New Year, these performances combine dance, music, and pantomime to recount the adventures of mythical characters and convey moral lessons.
