Horseman with Raised Arm Wood, very old brown patina, slightly weeping in places, showing signs of use and age. Dogon, Mali. 14.5 x 8 cm Raised toward the sky, the horseman’s arm lends this small sculpture a unique sense of dynamism. In Dogon tradition, the horse symbolizes prestige and authority; it also features in creation myths associated with the Nommo. The figure’s gesture recalls that of figures with raised arms, which represent a prayer to Amma or a plea for rain—essential for the earth’s fertility. Documentary reference: Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, Hermaphroditic Statue, Dogon, Mali, inv. 70.2018.3.2, section “Statues with Raised Arms,” on the interpretation of the gesture as a prayer to Amma or a plea for rain.
