Pair of porcelain bowls decorated with wading birds in a landscape, China, East India Company, 18th century Circular in shape with a curved rim and resting on a small foot, it is decorated with polychrome glazes in the “Famille Rose” color palette. The background is adorned with two long-legged wading birds with polychrome plumage, moving at the foot of a gnarled pine tree, among rocks, and in front of a building with European architecture and what appear to be church roofs. A third bird is depicted in flight above the scene. The inner rim is accented by a continuous frieze composed of small flowers and foliage rendered in polychrome. The outer wall is decorated, beneath the lobed rim, with a wide frieze of leafy scrolls and stylized flowers alternating with lanceolate and oval medallions, executed in green, yellow, and iron red with gold highlights. The piece as a whole features a delicate, airy design characteristic of Chinese “Famille Rose” export porcelain produced for the European market in the 18th century.
