Japanese Ukiyo-e color woodblock print, Katsushika Hokusai, 1820 Japanese Ukiyo-e color woodblock print, attributed to Katsushika Hokusai, 1760–1849, Edo period, inscribed on the reverse as “Japanese Woodblock Katsushika Hokusai First Edition 1820,” probably around 1820. The print depicts an everyday domestic or village scene with several figures carrying and sorting goods. On the left, an open housefront with figures inside and outside; in the center, several people with a tray or a carrying frame; on the right, a garden or courtyard scene with a tree, a fence, and hanging textiles. The depiction features fine line work and is sparingly colored in delicate shades of pink, gray, and black. The Japanese inscription in the upper left is only partially legible; the word “yūdachi” (“sudden summer rain”/“rain shower”) is recognizable. A definitive, complete translation of the inscription is not possible based on the photos. Framed behind glass in a black wooden frame with a dark mat. Condition reflects its age, with paper browning, water stains, a center crease, crease and pressure marks, slight soiling, partial rubbing, and loss of color. Frame shows signs of wear. Dimensions including frame: approx. 31 x 37 cm.
