Oil on panel, Jupiter and Io, mythological miniature painting, Ø 12.5 cm A very finely executed, high-quality miniature painting depicting what appears to be a mythological scene featuring Jupiter (Zeus) and Io. The composition depicts a nude young woman with elaborately adorned hair and a headdress, turning toward an older, bearded man. Noteworthy are the meticulous rendering of the facial features, the soft transitions of the flesh tones, and the finely balanced lighting. Stylistically, the work follows the tradition of French Rococo courtly painting. • French School, probably 19th century\ • Stylistically in the tradition of French Rococo painting\ • Subject presumably Jupiter (Zeus) and Io\ • Very fine oil painting on panel\ • Unsigned\ • Round, ornately decorated brass frame\ • Fine craquelure on the painting’s surface Diameter including frame: 12.5 cm
