941 - Lee, Frederic Richard (1798–1879) - “Resting Under the Trees,” oil on wood, signed “F.R.Lee” lower right; an idyllic landscape depicting a large group of shady trees under which a young woman with two baskets has settled down, presumably to have a light snack, as indicated by the behavior of the small dog in front of her, which is begging for a bite with its front paw raised; an unpaved dirt road leads from the lower center of the picture, slanting slightly to the left, toward the rustic wooden gate, behind it, further in the distance, a small village appears with a striking, pointed church tower; the fenced-in section in the foreground seems to correspond to the Romantic conception of a “Hortus conclusus”—an epitome, usually imbued with religious significance in art, of a longed-for place of peace, peace, and security.
