Large bronze lamp with a smoke burner. Early Byzantine, 5th–6th centuries A.D. L 24 cm, H 16.5 cm. Solid cast. Lamp with an ovoid body and two spouts featuring an octagonal, star-shaped rim around the burner hole. Above the round oil hole is a hinged lid in the shape of a lion’s head, with a cross beneath it. The spouts and handle form a stem and a wreath of leaves where they meet the body. On each side of the body is a lion with an open mouth. The upward-curving handle merges into a bowl, with one leaf from the wreath of leaves surrounding the bowl also raised to provide support. On the reverse side is a hinge designed to hold an openwork, dome-shaped lid crowned by a cross. Chains are suspended from three eyelets—two at the base of the muzzle and one on the leaf wreath of the bowl—and are connected to a single chain with a hook. Base with a standing ring. Green patina; the underside of the bowl has been repaired. Provenance: Formerly Gorny & Mosch Auction 268, 2019, lot 153; acquired in 1982 from the B.C. Collection, England; previously in an English art dealership in the late 1960s.
