101 - Etruscan relief depicting a Dionysian scene from an architectural wall panel. 200–170 BCE. Height 38.6 cm, width 38.8 cm, depth 14.4 cm. Light brown clay with faint traces of reddish-brown paint. On the left, a standing maenad with a cross-belt over her long, sleeveless chiton, her left hand resting on her hip. A snake winds around her left upper arm like a bracelet. Next to her sits a naked satyr with a flute case slung over his shoulder. He is identified by a panther pelt draped over his thigh and—though not visible to the ancient viewer—by the donkey’s tail at the back. It is certainly no coincidence that his posture resembles that of Dionysus on the east pediment of the Parthenon. On the reverse side, two preserved mounting holes are still visible. Includes a copy of the invoice! Broken vertically down the center and reassembled; both heads, the satyr’s hands, and parts of the back panel are missing; chipped along the lower edge. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of A. M., Ascona / Amsterdam; acquired in 1970 in Locarno from the Fasciani-Escher Gallery.
