Veiled Woman. Phoenicia, ca. late 6th–first half of the 5th century B.C. Reddish-brown terracotta, H 54 cm. A standing, smiling woman who appears to be pregnant. She wears her hair in the Greco-Egyptian style with spiral curls, along with a large veil, a floor-length, pleated tunic, and a stole reaching down to her thighs. Her right hand is raised, and her left hand is placed against her throat. The figure stands on a cube-shaped base, which sits on an altar-like base with a projecting plinth. Traces of marine growth, expertly restored. Provenance: Formerly in the Ifergan Collection (Málaga). Formerly in the Aphrodite Ancient Art Gallery, New York, before 1983. Previously in the Marwan Shehab Collection, acquired from Asfar & Sarkis, 1964. With Spanish export license! Published in: S. Garcia Alfonso (ed.), Shipwrecked Gods (2023), pp. 204ff. Cat. No. 162. The figure’s garment suggests that she is a woman of high social status, perhaps a priestess. The hand resting on her neck may be related to incantations that had to be recited correctly.
