Woman Nursing. Phoenicia. ca. late 6th – first half of the 5th century B.C. Reddish-brown terracotta, H 38 cm. Standing woman with a Greek-style hairstyle and veil. She wears the symbol of Tanit on her belt. Her right arm is raised; in her left arm she holds her newborn baby. The figure stands on an altar-like base with an overhanging edge; between her feet is a bowl that was once filled with liquid during ceremonies. With TL analysis! Traces of marine growth, expertly restored. Provenance: Formerly in the Ifergan Collection (Málaga). Formerly at Aphrodite Ancient Art Gallery, New York, before 1983. Previously in the Marwan Shehab Collection, acquired from Asfar & Sarkis, 1964. With Spanish export license! Published in: S. Garcia Alfonso (ed.), Shipwrecked Gods (2023), p. 219, cat. no. 184. This type of figurine may be associated with prayers to the goddesses of childbirth and lactation—Tanit and, to a lesser extent, Astarte—who were believed to ensure an abundant supply of breast milk for the newborn.
