6 - Attic red-figure kalpis from the Polygnotos group. 440–430 B.C. H 30.3 cm, W 26.9 cm, D 22.2 cm. A special form of hydria with a rounded shoulder. Between palmettes on the shoulder and a meander band serving as a base line, a scene from a woman’s boudoir is depicted. The woman seated in the center on a piece of furniture known as a klismos is playing the double aulos. To either side of her are two other women—one of whom holds the case for the instrument—listening to her play. Includes copies of all catalogs! Minor surface chips and small spalls at the rim; otherwise intact, though approximately one-third of the vessel is reddish-brown in color due to insufficient heat during firing. Provenance: formerly in the private collection of B. F., Munich; formerly at Galerie W. Schmidt, Munich; formerly in the private collection of v. d. G., Würzburg; formerly at Sotheby’s New York, December 14, 1994, Lot 60, attributed to the Polygnot group; from the collection of U.S. actor Bronson Pinchot; formerly at Sotheby’s London, December 3, 1991, Lot 150; formerly at Galerie Günter Puhze, Freiburg im Breisgau, Catalog 8 (1989), p. 22, no. 216, with illustration. At the height of Athens’ power and following the establishment of democracy in 457 B.C. with the introduction of stipends for elected representatives, the pictorial repertoire on vases of the so-called Parthenon period shifted such that civic virtues like the fulfillment of duty and political engagement now dominated. In depictions of women, the roles of mother and wife now took center stage. As our kalpis demonstrates, however, an Attic woman’s education also included the ability to engage in the arts. The former owner of the vase, Bronson Alcott Pinchot (b. 1959), starred alongside Hollywood greats in well-known films such as the *Beverly Hills Cop* trilogy and *The Devil’s Club*. He was also the star of the series *A Greek Conquers Chicago*. Pinchot, who originally wanted to study art history, later became known as a benefactor of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
