Pierre CULOT (1938–2011) Sandstone stele composed of four stacked elements Stamped Circa 1994 H: 204 cm / W: 87 cm / D: 40 cm Architect, researcher, and collector Jean-Jacques Terrin has always taken a particular interest in artists whose work creates a dialogue between creation, space, and material. It was in 1976, as part of a redevelopment project for the Solmer steelworks site in Fos-sur-Mer, that he met Pierre Culot, who had been commissioned to design a sculptural installation. Although the project did not come to fruition, this encounter marked the beginning of a deep friendship, fueled by a shared interest in art and architecture, which would bind them together until the artist’s passing. Over the course of nearly forty years, Jean-Jacques Terrin thus assembled a remarkable collection of works by Pierre Culot, reflecting his loyalty to the artist and his constant attention to the evolution of his body of work. Trained as a ceramicist and working with a sculptor’s sensibility, Pierre Culot explored the possibilities of stoneware—its textures, glazes, and volumes—in a language where the rigor of form blends with the sensuality of the material. Cross-shaped vases, wheel-thrown pottery, and pieces with subtle nuances bear witness to this artistic exploration, where the simplicity of the lines harmonizes with the richness of the material. The sculptures and stelae extend this exploration to another scale, transforming clay into a true building material that engages in dialogue with architecture and the landscape. Beyond the diversity of the works brought together, this collection bears witness to an artistic and human history. It embodies the memory of a friendship and the attentive eye of a collector who, over the years, has followed and gathered the many expressions of a singular artist.
