Jean SCHWARTZ (1899–1967) Produced by the SCHWARTZ-HAUTMONT workshops A domed circular gong made of copper-plated brass, with incised geometric motifs, set within a black-patinated wrought-iron base featuring Bacchus and clusters of fruit Circa 1925 H: 69 cm / W: 56 cm / D: 21 cm Exhibition: Model presented at the International Exhibition of Modern and Industrial Decorative Arts in Paris in 1925 Bibliography: “Mobilier et Décoration d’Intérieur,” February 1925, featuring a reproduction and description of our gong model Jean Schwartz occupies an important place in the history of 20th-century French decorative arts. At the crossroads of traditional craftsmanship and industrial innovation, he contributed to the development of artistic metalwork in modern architecture. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he graduated in 1926, he specialized in the design of metalwork that combined technical precision with aesthetic refinement. Coming from a family of industrialists, he joined the Schwartz-Haumont workshops, a company specializing in metal construction and artistic ironwork. He gradually rose to become one of its principal executives, and was appointed chairman and CEO in 1943. His work is part of the Art Deco movement, which was particularly celebrated at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris. He favored geometric shapes, structured lines, and stylized motifs, breaking with the sinuous curves of Art Nouveau. His approach was distinguished by a balance between ornamentation, functionality, and architectural integration. Among his achievements was the design of decorative motifs for the facades of La Samaritaine in Paris in 1929. Grilles, doors, balustrades, and stair railings demonstrate his ability to transform metal elements into integral components of the architectural decor. Schwartz-Haumont’s activities also extended internationally. In the early 1930s, the company participated in several projects in North Africa, notably in Algiers and Rabat, where it created ironwork for prestigious administrative and school buildings. Beyond his aesthetic vision, Jean Schwartz embodies the evolution of metalwork in the 20th century, marked by the convergence of artisanal craftsmanship, industrial production, and the demands of modern architecture. Through the simplicity of his compositions, the precision of his designs, and the elegance of his motifs, he contributed to the prominence of French artistic metalwork and remains a leading figure of Art Deco.
