Alfred Partikel is considered one of the leading figures in 20th-century East Prussian landscape painting. As a member of the Free Secession in Berlin and later as a professor of landscape painting at the Königsberg Academy of Art, he achieved national recognition during his lifetime. The Garden Landscape, created in 1914, belongs to his early body of work from his years in Berlin. With its vibrant colors, powerful brushstrokes, and rhythmic arrangement of the groups of trees, it already reveals the expressive interpretation of nature that would come to characterize Partikel’s later paintings. The intense interplay of deep blues and greens with warm yellow accents lends the composition a special atmospheric effect.
