Antique gilded chatelaine with enamel Second half of the 19th century. Metal, gilded. Weight: 37.4 g. Polychrome enamel decoration in shades of blue, turquoise, green, and red. Openwork, ornamentally decorated links. Multi-part design with hinges and a movable pendant, featuring an oval medallion or container. Large belt attachment on the back. L. 14.5 cm. W. max. 4 cm. Signs of age and wear. Elaborately crafted chatelaine in a historicizing style with rich, colorful enamel decoration. From the large, openwork rosette, movable decorative links lead to an oval pendant that is also richly ornamented. Chatelaines were worn on belts or clothing and served to attach watches, keys, and other personal items. In the 19th century, they also evolved into status symbols, with the texture of the materials and the artistry of the craftsmanship increasingly taking center stage.
