2441 - Shashka with a fitted scabbard

Shashka with a fitted scabbard Russia, circa 1881. Total length approx. 106 cm, blade length approx. 87.5 cm. Russian shashka with a slightly curved, single-edged blade. Brass hilt with a typical hook-shaped pommel extending downward and a catch hole; the grip section features a ribbed, dark-colored leather wrap. Characteristically, it lacks a pronounced guard or crossguard, as is typical for shashkas. The blade exhibits a patina typical of its age and use, as well as signs of earlier use; faint markings and stamps are visible at the base of the blade, including a manufacturer’s reference. The original scabbard is covered in black leather and features brass fittings and a movable carrying ring. Shashkas were carried in the Russian Empire primarily by Cossack units as well as by parts of the cavalry and infantry. Traces typical of age and use; overall in good, authentic condition.
