179 - 20th-century Chinese school.

20th-century Chinese school. “Lakeside Landscape with Figures.” Ink on paper. Signed in the upper left corner. Measurements: 32 x 39 cm; 47 x 54.5 cm (frame). The prominence of the line and the integration of painting and calligraphy place this work within the Chinese artistic tradition. A boat carrying three figures sails among willow trees whose branches frame the scene, while the distant shores are rendered with soft washes. The contrast between the more intense ink of the trunks and the delicacy of the branches reveals a brushwork reminiscent of calligraphic gestures. The subtle touches of color and the large, largely untouched areas of paper help to suggest the stillness of the water and the depth of the landscape. The human presence blends naturally into this setting, evoking an ideal of contemplation and harmony with nature, reinforced by the inscription and the red seal that balance the composition.
