Khalkhal—Berber anklet; Morocco, 19th century. Partially gilded and enameled silver. The clasp is missing. Measurements: 5 x 11.5 cm. Weight: 372 g. A rigid ankle bracelet with an articulated structure, consisting of interconnected ornamental panels, featuring elaborate cloisonné enamel work in shades of blue, green, and yellow, combined with applications of colored glass in reddish tones. The alternation of enameled surfaces, gilded elements, and glass details creates a rich chromatic effect, enhanced by the contrast between the luminosity of the silver and the intensity of the colors. The term khalkhal—also transcribed as jalkjal or xalxal—refers, in the Maghreb Arab context, to the anklets traditionally worn by women in North Africa. Particularly prevalent in Berber or Amazigh ornamental culture, these pieces of jewelry were much more than mere adornments: they were part of a system of social representation.
