Harp. France, 19th century. Carved, gilded, and ebonized wood. In good condition. Shows minor wear consistent with its age. No strings. Measurements: 144 x 62 x 51 cm. The sculptural treatment of the column and the hallmarks of ebonized wood and gilded elements lend this 19th-century French harp remarkable ornamental appeal. Its design incorporates classically inspired motifs, typical of the decorative repertoire revived by the applied arts of the period. The structure features a stylized column topped by a Corinthian-inspired capital, decorated with acanthus leaves and plant motifs. The neck, with its pronounced curve, connects to the triangular-shaped soundbox, while the molded base provides stability to the entire piece. The alternation of smooth surfaces and carved elements accentuates its architectural character. During the 19th century, France stood out as one of Europe’s leading centers for harp manufacturing, thanks to the development of specialized workshops that combined technical innovations with meticulous craftsmanship. These instruments reflect the close relationship between musical instrument making and the decorative arts of the period.
