Pair of Blue John stone urns; England, 19th century. Carved fluorite; Belgian black marble. Shows signs of restoration. Measurements: 29 x 12 x 12 cm. Pair of ovoid-shaped urns, carved from banded fluorite—with the characteristic alternating bands of violet, deep blue, and honey-yellow, known as “Blue John”—on a base of Belgian black marble. Blue John is a variety of fluorite featuring bands of violet, blue, and yellow. It is mined almost exclusively in the Castleton area of the Peak District in Derbyshire (England), primarily in the Treak Cliff and Blue John Cavern mines. The name is attributed to a corruption of the French expression “bleu et jaune,” referring to its colors. To date, no other deposits in the world have been found that exactly replicate this veining. The stone has been used since ancient times, but it became famous in the 18th century, when artisans in Derbyshire began turning it into vases, goblets, and urns. Matthew Boulton, at his factory in Soho (Birmingham), combined it with gilded bronze mountings to produce luxurious vases and incense burners, often following neoclassical designs. In the 19th century, production continued and was geared toward collecting and Victorian tourism, with workshops in Castleton, Matlock, and Buxton producing urns, goblets, obelisks, and decorative objects. Fluorite has a low hardness (4 on the Mohs scale) and is very brittle, tending to crack when worked; for this reason, workshops typically heat-treated it and filled the cracks with resins or pitch before turning and polishing. Pieces with higher-quality veining and fewer fractures are more highly valued, and well-sized paired specimens, such as these, are rare.
