PIETRO BARZANTI (Italy, 1842–1881), “Female Bust,” c. 1880. White Carrara marble. Signed. Measurements: 55 x 36 x 24 cm. A female bust carved in white Carrara marble by the Italian sculptor Pietro Barzanti, circa 1880. The work depicts a young woman with a smiling expression and a spontaneous demeanor, adorned with a scarf or hood that delicately frames her face. A small bouquet of roses, carved directly into the marble, stands out on her chest—an ornamental detail that lends a poetic and naturalistic touch to the composition. The sculptor pays special attention to the subject’s expression, whose smile conveys freshness, warmth, and a certain rapport with the viewer. The facial features are rendered with softness, while the modeling of the clothing reveals a remarkable mastery of carving, with folds and volumes that create an interesting interplay of light and shadow. Pietro Barzanti, also known in the literature and the art market as Pietro Bazzanti, was an Italian sculptor associated with the 19th-century Florentine art scene. His body of work consists mainly of allegorical figures, genre scenes, portraits, and interpretations of classical and Renaissance models. His work is rooted in the tradition of Florentine family workshops dedicated to marble sculpture, which achieved significant international prominence during the 19th century. These workshops served a clientele consisting of Grand Tour travelers, collectors, and members of the European and American aristocracy.
