SOM CHARLES GUENARDEAU (France, 1866–1930). Jewelry box, c. 1900. Bronze with various patinas and a silk-lined interior. Key included. Bears a foundry mark. Measurements: 13 x 26 x 15 cm. This jewelry box is a refined example of French decorative arts from the turn of the century, set against the backdrop of the development of Art Nouveau and the influence of Japonism in Europe. Its relief decoration, featuring blackberry branches, leaves, and berries, along with the birds depicted in the central medallion, reflects an ornamental conception inspired by the observation of nature—a hallmark of Modernist taste. The meticulous modeling of the bronze and the interplay of patinas enhance the hallmarks of texture and depth, while the silk-lined interior reflects the object’s sumptuous function.During the final decades of the 19th century, Japonism exerted a notable influence on the French decorative arts, fostering the incorporation of asymmetrical plant motifs, birds, and compositions inspired by Japanese prints. These elements found a particularly fitting expression in small bronze objects intended for private use—such as jewelry boxes, inkwells, and desk boxes—in which the quality of the craftsmanship was combined with functionality and ornamental refinement. Som-Charles Guenardeau (1866–1930) was a French sculptor active from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century, known for creating decorative bronze objects in the Art Nouveau style. His known body of work includes boxes, inkwells, frames, desk accessories, and other ornamental objects, characterized by the presence of plant motifs rendered with naturalistic sensitivity. Guenardeau collaborated with major French foundries, including Susse Frères, whose workshops played a prominent role in the production and marketing of artistic bronzes. Pieces by him are also known to have been produced for the Émile Colin & Cie foundry, which documents his involvement in the network of specialized workshops that underpinned French decorative arts production around 1900. His works are featured in auction catalogs specializing in decorative arts from this period.
