Tapestry; Brussels, possibly EVRARD III, LEYNERS, early 17th century. “The Months.” Wool and silk. Design based on models by Jerome de Potter. Measurements: 240 x 307 cm. Flemish tapestry woven in wool and silk, part of a series dedicated to the allegorical representation of the months of the year, associated in this case with summer or the harvest in the “Months of Lucas” or “Mortlake” series. The depiction combines elements of landscape, human figures, and activities linked to rural life, establishing a connection between the natural cycle of the seasons and the occupations typical of each time of year. The rich color palette and the combined use of wool and silk create hallmarks of texture, nuances of light, and spatial depth—distinctive characteristics of high-quality Flemish tapestry. The piece is associated with the work of the Leyniers family, one of the most important dynasties of master tapestry makers in Brussels, whose activity is documented from the 16th century and spanned several generations. The attribution to Everaert III Leyniers (1597–1680) is consistent with the work of his workshop, one of the city’s most prominent during the 17th century. Everaert was a prominent figure in the Brussels tapestry guild, of which he became dean in 1635, and he participated in the creation of important textile series intended for the international market. The composition is also linked to designs attributed to Jérôme de Potter, a draftsman and designer of tapestry cartoons whose work is associated with various series dedicated to the months of the year. His contribution consisted of designing the composition, which was subsequently transferred to the fabric through the specialized work of master tapestry weavers. This distinction between the creator of the design and the person responsible for its execution is fundamental to understanding the artistic production system of the Flemish workshops. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Brussels established itself as one of Europe’s leading centers for tapestry production. Its workshops achieved international prestige thanks to the technical quality of their weaves, the richness of their materials, and the collaboration between prominent painters, draftsmen, and master tapestry weavers.Flemish tapestries were objects of extraordinary economic and artistic value. They were commissioned by monarchs, members of the nobility, and major religious institutions to decorate palaces and stately residences.
